The default installation of VSMT 1.1 doesn’t come with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) patch files. These files are required for the post-deploy modification task, but they must also exist to complete the hardware validation test on a source server with SP2 installed.

To update your VSMT 1.1 installation with Windows Server 2003 SP2, download the SP2 executable from www .microsoft.com/downloads. Extract Windows 2003 Server SP2 to C:\Temp\SP2 using the /x command line option.

Create a folder called SP2 in C: Program Files\Microsoft VSMT\Patches Source\5.2.3790\. Copy all the XML files from the …\5.2.3790 directory to the …\5.2.3790\SP2 directory. Copy the following files from C:\TEMP\SP2 extracted copy of Windows Server 2003 SP2: ntoskrnl .exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, winsrv.dll, ntdll.dll, kernel32. dll, halacpi.dll, HAL.dll, aic78xx.sys, atapi.sys, intelide.sys, pciide.sys, pciidex .sys, win32k.sys. Update the cache using VMPatch:

 VMPatch /s:c:\temp\sp2

Now your VSMT installation is ready to migrate Windows Server 2003 servers with SP2 installed.

When i extract the SP2 files, all files are ending with '_' (eg., ntoskrnl.ex_). Should i need to rename them? Even after renaming them, i still getting the same error. Let me know what should be done.

    Cheers

jtrav, thanks for your feedback! I asked the author, Robert Larson, to clarify. His answer: "I guess it was implied but not specific. Copy the files to this directory: c:\\Program Files\\Microsoft VSMT\\Patches\\Source\\5.2.3790\\SP2."

Is this article missing a destination to copy the extracted sp2 to?
