On March 30, Microsoft posted SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2) on its Web site. SP2 fixes bugs in both SQL Server 7.0 and Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0. SP2 also contains all the fixes in SP1, so you can apply it to either SQL Server 7.0 or SQL Server 7.0 with SP1. Microsoft recommends SP2 for new SQL Server 7.0 and MSDE 1.0 installations. Use only SP2 to upgrade MSDE 1.0.

SP2 for SQL Server 7.0 and MSDE 1.0 is a large download. On the Intel platform, the download is 106MB; on the Alpha platform, it’s122.2MB. Microsoft split each version into two pieces to facilitate downloading. SP2's database-component updates include

  • Data engine
  • Database client utilities, such as SQL Server Enterprise Manager and osql for SQL Server 7.0
  • Database client connectivity components, such as the OLE DB Provider for SQL Server, the SQL Server ODBC driver, and the client Net-Libraries

SP2's OLAP updates include

  • OLAP Services
  • OLAP client components, such as OLAP Manager and the OLE DB Provider for OLAP Services
  • Database client connectivity components, such as the OLE DB Provider for SQL Server, the SQL Server ODBC driver, and the client Net-Libraries

You can apply these two upgrades independently using the downloaded files. For a complete upgrade, you must apply both components. For more information about SQL Server 7.0 SP2, see
