I hate Remote Access Service (RAS). I mean, I really hate RAS. Or rather, I hate dial-up connections and the vagaries of phone line quality, busy signals, and irritating squawks from modems. (I never dare turn off my speakers, because the speakers are often a system's only indicator of why a connection won't go through.) I hate dial-up connections so much that since 1995 I've had a frame relay connection from both my office and my house to...

In Mark Minasi’s Inside Out: “The Case of the Empty Network Neighborhood” (January), the author says you need to download and apply either rasupd.exe or ras2upd.exe, depending on which version of Windows 95 you’re using. Earlier in the article, the author talks about downloading and applying the Dial-Up-Networking (DUN) 1.3 upgrade (msdun13.exe, last updated in September 1998). Because I’m in the process of distributing the DUN 1.3 upgrade, I immediately checked out the other two updates and found they aren’t necessary.
The Microsoft article “Err Msg: No Domain Server Was Available to Validate …” (http://support.microsoft.com/
support/kb/articles/q154/4/34.asp) states, “This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OEM Service Release 1 (OSR1): RASAPI32.DLL version 4.0.953 (7/9/96) and later. This file is included in the self-extracting RASUPD.EXE file. This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and 2.1: RASAPI32.DLL version 4.0.1112 (3/3/97) and later. This file is included in the self-extracting RAS2UPD.EXE file.”
After installing DUN 1.3, you’ll find that the version of rasapi32.dll is 4.10.1903 (8/14/98). The September 1998 version of DUN 1.3 includes a later version of this file, so you don’t need any other updates.
