When you try to do a clean install of Windows 2000, or an upgrade to Windows 2000, on a computer that has Windows Me installed, you receive:

The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because Setup was unable to load the file c:\windows\upgdlls\w95upg.dll\WIN9XUPG\W95UPG.DLL.

The system cannot find the file specified.

NOTE: C:\Windows may be replaced with the actual folder where Windows Me is installed.

If you press OK, Setup may continue, but the option to upgrade is dimmed.

If you had previously interrupted/aborted Windows 2000 Setup, this behavior will occur.

To fix the problem:

1. Use the Windows Me Explorer to navigate to %windir%\Setup, where %windir% is the path to the folder where Windows Me is installed.

2. Delete the following files:

Cfgmgr32.dll
Imagehlp.dll
Setupapi.dll
W95upg.dll

3. Restart the Windows 2000 install.

NOTE: An upgrade from Windows Me to Windows 2000 is NOT supported. See Windows Me to Windows 2000 Upgrade Is Not Supported.
