Q. Is WINS a part of Windows Server 2008?

A. Yes, WINS is part of Server 2008. However it has been demoted from a Role to a Feature, which might give a hint to its future as part of Windows Server. No Server 2008 components require WINS, and most new services--such as Exchange 2007--also don’t require it. There remains some need for flat name resolution (i.e., with clustered Exchange), but that can also be accomplished through the DNS search suffix list or by using the new Server 2008 global names zone.
