I recently had a problem with Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 5.5 on a couple of PCs in my network. To solve the problem, I needed to reinstall IE 5.5 over the Internet. However, using the download installation of IE for every PC in my network would have been time-consuming. I found the following alternative method in the Microsoft article "Download-Only Setup of Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 and Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q257249).

Go to Microsoft's Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie55sp1/default.asp) and download IE 5.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Select Run on the Start menu, browse to the folder that contains the ie5setup.exe file, and enter

/c:"ie5wzd.exe /d /s:""#E

For example, if you saved the ie5setup.exe file in C:\download\ie55, the command would be

"C:\download\ie55\ie5setup
.exe" /c:"ie5wzd.exe /d /s:""#E

Press Enter, then select the appropriate items for your OS. To perform a quiet installation for your OS, enter

"C:\download\ie55\ie5setup
.exe" /c:"ie5wzd.exe /d /q /s:""#E

Available installation options are Current and All. You can't perform a quiet download for specific OSs.

The solution I used also works for IE 6.0. Go to the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/default.asp) and download IE 6.0. Select Run on the Start menu, browse to the folder that contains the ie6setup.exe file, and enter

/c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E

I am 19 years old and I hav had a dialup connection for around 10 years and im very familiar with the internet explorer updates on a slow connection and I currently hav 5 computers of all types and speeds with windows 95, 98, 98se to xp, two of which are networked, sharing dialup. I have ocd and I have to save every piece of software ive downloaded for use later on, especially so i wont have to re-download it everytime on my slow connection. The ie 5, 5.5, and 6.0 versions are a must have if u work on computers. or for any IT pro. There are several sites if u hav high speed internet u can get thies easily at http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msie or http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit but for those of you who still have dial up like me there is a solution. Im not an aol fan myself and for all those people that have ever hated aol and their free aol CDs and bloated software well now thoes very CDs can actually come in handy. you can get it at your local wal-mart and it will most likely have sevral internet explorer versions for example the one i got had ie5.5 for 9x, ie5.5 for 2k, ie6 for 98, and ie6 for 2k under the directories D:\\AOL70\\BROWSERS\\MSIE and D:\\AOL90S . as far as ie 5.0 goes I have that on an aol 6.0 cd which you probably cant get anymore. anyways just wanted to put that out there.

    VERY HELPFUL site
At home I have a slow modem connection - no way to download the 12MB IE explorer package there. I downloaded the IE6 english explorer and installed it on my WIN98Japanese notebook works perfect! I really appreciate this useful information. Thanks a lot!
MS probably should think beyond the horizon - there may be users out there who are not having the most up to date gadgets...and still want to enjoy the internet.
