Widespread reports on the Internet today say that all Zunes with 30GB hard drives died last night. When powered on, the portable music players apparently get stuck at their startup screens. Some reports say that a hard reset makes the players work, but as soon as they're plugged into a computer to charge or transfer data, they break again.

As of this morning, Microsoft's Zune support site simply said "Customers with 30gb Zune devices may experience issues when booting their Zune hardware. We’re aware of the problem and are working to correct it. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience!"

Between the generally poor reputation of Windows Vista, Xbox 360's "red ring of death" failures, and these new Zune problems, Microsoft certainly has its work cut out for it in the coming year.
