NT Gatekeeper: Promoting a Windows NT 4.0 Server Without Reinstalling the OS

Promoting a Windows NT 4.0 member server to a domain controller (DC) requires reinstalling the OS. Can a third-party tool promote the server without requiring me to reinstall the OS?

Algin Technology's UPromote tool can promote NT 4.0 member servers to BDCs or PDCs as well as demote BDCs and PDCs to member servers. UPromote runs only on NT 4.0, not on earlier versions of NT. Microsoft doesn't support this tool, so make sure that you make an operational backup of your server and DCs before you use UPromote in a production environment. For more information about UPromote, visit the Algin Technology Web site at http://www.algintech.com/utools/upromote.asp.
