Disk Imaging Software

InstantDoc ID #40139
Rating: (2)

Symantec Ghost drew raves from our readers, garnering the Best Disk Imaging Software award with an overwhelming 65 percent of the total votes. Representative reader comments about the software include, "Solid performance, reliable, inexpensive," from a reader in Orange County, California, and "The corporate edition is remarkable for rollouts," from a reader in Charleston, South Carolina.

Symantec Ghost deploys, recovers, clones, and migrates PCs. From a central management console, you can deploy or restore an OS image or application onto a PC and migrate user settings and profiles. You can deploy entire OSs, application packages, network configuration settings, and incremental backups. By using the Ghost Client, administrators don't need to visit target PCs for routine deployment or maintenance. Symantec Ghost is backward-compatible and can restore images made with the same or earlier Ghost versions.

The author of this article is just plain wrongheaded in his assessment of Norton Ghost. Yes, you do need a different Ghost image for each different hardware configuration - but only if you are an inept Ghost user. You see, whether it's PowerQuest or Ghost you are talking about, Microsoft provides Sysprep to aid in this process. You configure Sysprep with the aid of an inf file that tells it where to find the drivers for each different hardware config. It takes a little while to get all the different paths right, but once you do it's an enormous time and resource saver. You only need one image for each different HAL type. So, you build your image with apps installed and can remotely control their deployment with Ghost's easy to use control center. Or you can deploy a base image with no apps, and apply apps using the AI (Auto Install) package manager. The latter is a more efficacious approach. I am disappointed that a TechRepublic author would not even MENTION the use of Sysprep and think he has to use different images for each different config.
