Recovery Times in Database Design

If your restore process can restore 30GB per hour and the service level agreement (SLA) requires a database recovery time of 1 hour, then a database can be no larger than 30GB. If you're using traditional backup and restore software, many smaller databases might be needed to meet SLA restore times. However, if you use advanced backup and restore technology, such as Microsoft Volume ShadowCopy Services (VSS) or Snap technology, the technical implications can affect the database design. Using VSS, you can back up or restore an entire storage group (SG), including all databases, in seconds (the exact time depends on the implementation and configuration). Therefore, when you use these types of technology, databases can be much larger than before and still meet restore SLAs.
