Symantec also won our third antivirus award: Best Antivirus/Mail Server. Symantec Mail Security for SMTP enjoyed a comfortable margin over its nearest competitors, earning 39 percent of the vote to Trend Micro's 16 percent and McAfee's 15 percent.

Mail Security provides high-performance, integrated mail protection against virus threats, spam, and other unwanted content at the Internet email (SMTP) gateway. The software defends against new and known viruses, and attachment- and subject-line-blocking features enhance protection against emerging threats. In addition, a new Mass-Mailer Cleanup feature eliminates worm-infected messages.

Mail Security's multilayered antispam protection combines enhanced antispam heuristics, custom filtering rules, real-time and custom blacklists, and various whitelisting techniques to maximize detections and minimize false positives. Whitelists automatically capture mail domains that your organization trusts. You can insert custom tags into spam messages, assign different dispositions based on spam score thresholds, and distribute tasks associated with controlling spam. You can filter for message characteristics such as subject line, attachment, message size, and words and phrases in body text.
