One of the new features in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) is the Automatic Updates client. If you use the Windows Update site to keep your system current, you’ll appreciate the fact that the Automatic Updates client performs this task automatically. What happens if you've installed Service Pack 3, but the Windows Update Service is not available. That is, I go to Windows Update and it scans the system and tells me what updates are available, however it doesn't download them, just sits there on the box saying "downloading updates". When I check "Services" the Windows Update Service is not listed. How do I add or reinstall the service?

I've been having some problem with Automatic Updates. It seems to lock a file in the Cookies folder. I am unable to copy a profile to the Default User profile and keep the Automatic Updates enabled. Is there a workaround or fix for this?

Does this work on locked down workstations using standard User permissions that can't install programs?
