IIS Informant: Adding SSL to Web Folders

I've successfully used Windows 2000 Professional's My Network Places to set up some Web folders. Can I go one step further and add Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protection to a Web folder URL to encrypt logon and data transfer between the workstation and a server?

Yes. You can create a Web folder that has the location https://servername to encrypt sessions between the client and the server. The client will then use WWW Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) to talk to the server. If Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions are installed on the Web site, they'll provide WebDAV-like capability.

Note that Windows XP Professional Edition's WebDAV redirector doesn't support SSL, so you can't use XP Pro's My Network Places to create a Web folder that has an https://servername address. However, you might be able to use Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) to create a Web folder with SSL protection.
