Permission
Effect
Read
Allows viewing, copying, printing, and renaming files, folders, and
objects. Doesn’t allow launching executable programs unless executing
a script file.
Allows reading object permissions, object attributes, and extended attributes
(e.g., EFS, Archive bit). Allows listing a folder’s files and subfolders.
Write
Allows reading permissions plus creating and overwriting files and folders.
List (Folders Only)
Allows viewing filenames and subfolder names within a folder.
Read & Execute
Allows reading permissions and executing program files.
Modify
Allows all permissions except the ability to take ownership and set
permissions.
Allows reading, deleting, changing, and overwriting files and folders.
Full Control
Allows full control over the file or folder, including the ability to set permissions and take ownership.
Special Permissions
Allows some combination of the underlying 14 more-granular permissions that doesn’t fall into one of the other 6 summary permissions. Includes the Synchronize permission.
